Dear Rupert Murdoch
29 August 2009
Your son James has complained this week, that the BBC has damaged your business.
I agree.
I am sure he thought that a bad thing, otherwise he would not have used such hyperbole to express his and your view. He said, for example that the scope of the BBC's activities and ambitions was "chilling".
I am quite sure that you would rather have a monopoly in the UK. I remember how you gobbled up your only UK competitor in satellite broadcasting, BSB, and on that occassion, the government of the day helped you out on that occasion, by allowing that to happen. This would be your then-friend Thatcher at work?
The BBC has certainly had an influence on the type of programming that you might otherwise beam into the living rooms of UK homes.
Can’t help noticing that if you were provided with the US protection to broadcast anything at all, under the noble statute of freedom of expression, you may be inclined to broadcast any old crap, but since you are set against the standards of the BBC, you are perhaps less inclined to give a free reign to comedy bigots like Bill O’Reilly or Glen Beck.
Rupert Murdoch is still doing nicely in the UK, so maybe you should count your blessings. Sky remains popular in the UK due mainly to your astute sports coverage, and you certainly have a popular touch, and a way of exploiting “D” cups. However it clearly rankles with you, that the BBC is both better than Sky TV in quality and intelligence, but also more popular. The BBC website must have been the last straw, since you don't have one worth passing.
Just checked out yours for the first time. Must get back to you later about my subscription. What gives?
This must really annoy you, but think on it kindly because the BBC has improved Sky TV and made it more worthy. Think on the BBC as beneficial kite-mark for you to aspire to.
If all else fails you may just have to go down market, if that is at all possible.
Is it true that you can’t stand Bill O’Reilly, but have hired him because you have contempt for the American Public.
